Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man came together in 2002 when Gibbons sang on Paul Webb's solo album under the name Rustin Man. That same year they released their debut album "Out of Season," which mixed folk and ambient electronic sounds. The record included songs like "Mysteries" and "Funny Time of Year."
Gibbons was already known as the vocalist for Portishead, and her voice carries a particular weight that works well with Webb's sparse guitar arrangements. Their collaboration feels less like a formal project and more like two musicians finding common ground in quieter, reflective spaces.
They haven't released much music together since that first album, but "Out of Season" remains a distinct piece of work separate from Gibbons' main band. The songs tend to move slowly, with lyrics that lean toward melancholy without becoming heavy-handed.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
