Beto Quintanilla

Beto Quintanilla was the lead singer and accordionist for Los Tejanos, a Tex-Mex band that formed in San Benito, Texas. Their debut album 'Tejanos' came out in 1987, and they followed it with records like 'Esencia' and 'Palabras.' The original lineup included his brother Emilio on bass and Joe Lopez on drums.

Quintanilla wrote corridos that told stories from the borderlands, often about smuggling and violence. Songs like 'El Rojo,' 'Raquenel Villanueva,' and '4 Camionetas' became staples in the genre. 'Las Aguilas Andan Solas' is probably his best-known track, a ballad about loneliness that resonated with Tejano listeners.

In 1995, Quintanilla was involved in a car accident that killed his brother and sister-in-law. He kept performing afterward, though the band's lineup changed over time. His music stayed grounded in the traditions of norteño and conjunto, even as Los Tejanos found commercial success in the 1990s.
