Archive material and source history

Betty Hutton was born Elizabeth June Thornburg in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1921. She sang in church and local shows as a child, then moved to New York as a teenager to try for a career in entertainment.

Her big break came in 1942 when she starred in the Broadway musical "Panama Hattie." Her performance of the song "It's a Man" from that show became an instant hit and propelled her to stardom. That same year she signed with Paramount Pictures and began appearing in films like "The Fleet's In."

Hutton's personal life often made headlines. She married six times and struggled with alcoholism. In the late 1950s, she retreated from the spotlight to focus on recovery. Other songs from her catalog include "A Bushed And A Peck," "Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing in a Hurry," and "Doctor Lawyer Indian Chief."
