Beyond the Throne formed in the late 1990s, playing a mix of melodic death metal with symphonic touches. Their debut album 'And You Are the Lamb' came out in 2001, with the title track becoming a fan favorite. The band's lineup included Alaric Stormwind on vocals, Seraphina Dawnstrider on lead guitar, Aetherius Nightcaller on rhythm guitar, Valkyrie Shadowmoon on bass, and Orion Skyforge on drums.
They followed up with 'Shadows of the Abattoir' in 2003, a concept album that featured guest vocals from Mark Boals. Their 2005 release 'The Age of Leviathan' showed more progressive ambitions, while 2007's 'Aetherium' returned to their melodic death metal foundation with atmospheric keyboard work.
In 2004, rhythm guitarist Aetherius Nightcaller was arrested for drug possession, which caused the band to take a brief break. Their lyrics often dealt with religious and spiritual themes, drawing mixed reactions from listeners and critics alike.
