Antônio Bezerra da Silva was born in 1927 in Irajá, a poor neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. His mother practiced Umbanda and introduced him to samba and candomblé rhythms early on. He started singing and writing songs, influenced by artists like Aracy de Almeida and Cartola.
In the 1960s, Bezerra worked with the samba school Beija-Flor, writing songs for them including "A Grande Família" and "Ratos e Urubus." He also collaborated with Paulinho da Viola on "Coração Leviano." His lyrics often dealt directly with poverty, racism, and political corruption, which sometimes got him in trouble with censors.
He recorded albums like "Samba da Cria" in 1963, "Bezerra da Silva" in 1972, and "Meu Nome É Favela" in 1976. Songs like "Batuque na Cozinha" and "Walkman" became particularly well-known. His voice had a rough, unpolished quality that felt honest to many listeners.
