Big Drill Car formed in 1992 with Chris Horgan on vocals and guitar, Rob Squires on bass, and Dave Garbacz on drums. Horgan had been in the band Medicine before this, while Squires and Garbacz came from hardcore backgrounds. They put out three albums in the 1990s: 'Share This Place' in 1993, 'Quintuplets' in 1995, and 'Welcome to the Planet' in 1997.
Their sound mixed indie rock with noise and psychedelic touches, avoiding straightforward categorization. Horgan's lyrics often dealt with isolation and searching for meaning. The song 'Take Away' shows their quieter, more reflective side, while tracks like '16 Lines' and '5 Year Itch' capture their rougher edges.
They never broke through commercially, partly due to Horgan's mental health issues and the band's unwillingness to compromise their vision. Some critics found them pretentious or difficult to access. They disbanded after their third album, leaving behind a small but dedicated following who connected with their particular blend of melancholy and noise.
