Big Gay Al formed in Berkeley, California in 1989 around vocalist Dan Savage, bassist Sheldon Schwartz, and drummer Tom Ammiano. Savage performed under the name Big Gay Al, often wearing a pink dress and tiara on stage while the rest of the band dressed in similarly outrageous costumes. Their live shows became known for this flamboyant cross-dressing and uninhibited humor.
Their music mixed comedy with pointed social commentary about homophobia, AIDS, and LGBTQ+ rights. The song "I'm Super (Thanks For Asking)" became something of an anthem for marginalized listeners. They released several albums including 'Bozo' in 1993, 'Queer as Folk' in 1995, and 'The Big Book of Homosexuality' in 1998.
They used those controversies as material rather than backing down. The band kept performing and recording into the 2000s, putting out 'The Biggest Little Band in America' in 2002.
