A sharp, streetwise lyricist whose 1995 debut announced a major talent.
For his raw debut energy, 'Put It On' is the place. For the darker, posthumous work, try 'All Black.'
Big L's 1995 single 'Put It On' captured Harlem's energy with a delivery that was both menacing and playful. His album 'Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous' gave a voice to the streets at a time when East Coast hip-hop was defining itself. Even tracks like 'All Black' from his posthumous work show why his wordplay still gets quoted.
He was Lamont Coleman from Harlem, and his first album came out in 1995. After he was killed in 1999 at 24, the album 'The Big Picture' was released in 2000 with songs like 'M.V.P.'
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
