Bill Anderson was born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1937. He started playing guitar at eight and performed on local radio as a teenager. In 1958, he signed with Decca Records and released his debut album, 'City Lights.'

His 1962 song 'Old Rugged Cross' became a country standard and found its way into Christian hymnals. Other songs from that period include '8 X 10' and '500 Miles Away From Home.' He recorded with musicians like fiddle player Johnny Gimble and guitarist George Richey.

Anderson released more than sixty albums over the decades, including 'Po' Folks' in 1962, 'Still' in 1968, and 'Whispering Hope' in 1975. His catalog also contains songs like 'Angel Band' and 'Softly And Tenderly.'
