Archive material and source history
Billy Mackenzie was a Scottish singer best known as the frontman of the Associates. He had a distinctive, soaring vocal style that could shift into a mournful falsetto, heard clearly on songs like 'Party Fears Two.' He formed the band with guitarist Alan Rankine in 1979, and their debut album 'The Affectionate Punch' came out the following year.
Their sound was often described as haunting or eccentric, built around Mackenzie's voice and Rankine's angular guitar work. The Associates disbanded in 1982, though Mackenzie and Rankine briefly reunited in 1990. After the band, Mackenzie worked on solo material. He died in 1997 at age 39.
