As a solo artist, Rankin released his debut album 'North Atlantic Drift' in 1991. His second album 'When the Ship Comes In' came out in 1993. The song 'Baby's Got a Gun' arrived in 1995, with its lyrics about gun violence drawing both attention and some criticism.
Rankin released several more albums including 'Lost & Found' in 1998 and 'Silverbox' in 2004. His catalog includes songs like 'A Day in the Life' and 'Burning Down' alongside his better-known work.
