Background notes

Archive material and source history

Billy Somerville came out of Glasgow in the 1980s with a voice that could stop you in your tracks. He signed with A&M Records in 1984 and put out his debut album 'Never Too Late' that same year. The record had a song called 'Isn't This The Way You Are?' that people still talk about.

He made five studio albums between 1984 and 2004, including 'World So Strange' in 1986 and a self-titled record in 1988. In 1989, he publicly came out as gay, which was a notable thing to do in the music business at that time. He kept working with a band that included his brothers John on bass and Neil on drums, plus guitarist Ian Carmichael.

Somerville's last album was 'Happenstance' in 2004. That song 'Isn't This The Way You Are?' is still the one most people know him for.
