Editor's note

Binomio de Oro de América, a vallenato duo from Colombia.

Formed in 1976, they shaped Colombian folk music with accordion-driven songs like 'Que Pena'.

For a sense of their early sound, 'Que Pena' holds up. Later, 'Te Haré Feliz' shows how they carried on.

They helped define vallenato for a generation, with songs like 'Que Pena' and 'Distintos Destinos' becoming radio fixtures across Colombia. Their sound centered on Rafael Orozco's vocals and Israel Romero's accordion, giving the folk style a steady, recognizable voice. Even after Orozco's death in 1992, the band kept going, adding tracks like 'Te Haré Feliz' to a catalog that spans more than twenty albums.

The group started in 1976 with Orozco and Romero, recording staples like 'Que Pena'. After Orozco was killed, Romero continued with a new vocalist, Jean Carlos Centeno, and they maintained their output with songs such as 'Cuando Vuelvas'. Over the years, the lineup included drummer Gonzalo 'El Cocha' Molina and bassist José Fernando 'Morre' Romero alongside the core.
