Editor's note

Birds of Tokyo, Perth's radio-ready rock band

A Perth quartet that found its sound through steady work and radio staples.

For a sense of their range, try 'Lanterns' and 'Minor War'. They show the band's knack for both accessible hooks and darker textures.

They've been a reliable presence on Australian radio since the late 2000s, with songs like 'Lanterns' and earlier tracks like 'Anchor' becoming fixtures. Their 2013 album 'March Fires' hit number one in Australia, showing how their steady approach connected. They're not flashy, but they've consistently delivered songs that stick around.

They formed in Perth in 2004 around vocalist Ian Kenny and guitarist Adam Spark, with Adam's brother Glenn on drums and Ian Berney on bass. Their debut 'Day One' came out in 2006, followed by 'Universes' in 2008. They had to pull 'Anchor' from their self-titled album in 2010 due to a copyright dispute, but put out a revised version the next year.
