Birgit Nilsson

Birgit Nilsson was born in Västra Karup, Sweden in 1918. She studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music with Arne Sunnegårdh before making her professional debut at the Royal Opera in Stockholm in 1946, singing Agathe in Weber's 'Der Freischütz.'

During the 1950s, she began performing internationally at houses like the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Covent Garden in London, and La Scala in Milan. She became particularly known for Wagner roles such as Isolde in 'Tristan und Isolde,' Brünnhilde in the Ring cycle, and Elektra in Strauss's opera of the same name. Her voice had both power and clarity, which served those demanding parts well.

One of her notable recordings includes 'Act 3: Grane, mein Roß, sei mir gegrüßt!' from Wagner's 'Götterdämmerung,' which captures the dramatic intensity she brought to the stage. She sang with a kind of directness that cut through even the largest orchestras.
