Birhu formed in São Paulo in 1995, a group of musicians drawn together by Brazilian folklore, rock, and electronic music. Their name plays on both an ancient Amazonian ritual dance and the city's street life. Their debut album came out in 1998, featuring the song 'Modinha do Pico do Jaraguá,' which became something of a cult classic.
They worked with synthesizers, drum machines, and field recordings, creating a sound that didn't fit neatly into Brazil's traditional music industry at the time. Their lyrics often touched on urban life and environmental themes. Later albums included 'Jardim' in 2001, 'Guérilla' in 2005, and 'Bioma' in 2011.
