Biribemba formed in Salvador, Brazil in 2005 with Carla Visi on vocals and percussion, Iuri Passos on vocals and guitar, Fred Ferreira on vocals and bass, Fernando do Carmo on drums, and Pedro Bala on percussion. They drew from the city's Afro-Brazilian musical traditions while working with contemporary sounds.
Their 2011 album 'Brilho da Noite' gave them their most recognizable song of the same name. The track became something of an anthem, particularly within marginalized communities in Brazil.
In 2013, the band faced some criticism over their song 'Farofa,' which some accused of promoting drug use. They released four studio albums between 2008 and 2019, including 'Samba Diferente' in 2015 and 'Luz do Sol' in 2019.
