Editor's note

Björk, from Reykjavík punk to electronic nature

An Icelandic artist whose solo work blends electronic music with themes of nature and emotion.

For a sense of her range, listen to 'Human Behaviour' and 'Arisen My Senses.' They frame the arc from her early solo work to her recent output.

Her music moves from the accessible pop of 'Venus As a Boy' to the more experimental structures of songs like 'Jóga.' She's also composed film scores, like for 'Dancer in the Dark,' and her 1996 swan dress at the Oscars became a defining public moment. Later albums like 'Vulnicura' and 'Fossora' keep pushing her sound forward.

She started in the punk band Spit and Snot as a kid, then co-founded The Sugarcubes in 1985 before going solo in 1992. Her first album 'Debut' came out in 1993, followed by records like 'Homogenic' in 1997 and 'Vespertine' in 2001.

Björk Guðmundsdóttir was born in Reykjavík in 1965 and started playing music early, joining the punk band Spit and Snot at age 11. She co-founded the post-punk group The Sugarcubes in 1985, which found some international success before she left in 1992 to begin her solo career. Her first solo album, 'Debut,' came out in 1993 and was followed by records like 'Post' in 1995, 'Homogenic' in 1997, and 'Vespertine' in 2001.

Her music often blends electronic arrangements with nature-inspired themes, and songs like 'Venus As a Boy,' 'Jóga,' and 'Human Behaviour' show her range from accessible pop to more experimental structures. She has also composed film scores, including for 'Dancer in the Dark' in 2000, and collaborated with artists such as Tricky and Radiohead.

In 1996, Björk wore a swan dress designed by Marjan Pejoski to the Academy Awards, which became a widely discussed moment of her public persona. Her later albums include 'Vulnicura' from 2015, 'Utopia' from 2017, and 'Fossora' released in 2022.
