BK-81 formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1981 with Renato Russo on vocals, Dado Villa-Lobos on guitar, Marcelo Bonfá on bass, and André X on keyboards and vocals. They released their first album 'Blus' in 1984, followed by 'A Cruz e a Espada' the next year. Their 1987 album was simply titled 'Álbum', and they kept recording through the late 80s and into the mid-90s with records like 'Tuatara' and 'Meu Nome É Playground'.
Their song 'Em Nome de' became particularly well-known for its lyrics about the AIDS crisis, which drew criticism from some authorities and religious groups. Other tracks like 'Cidade Distante' and 'Carmim' show the range of their catalog. The band's sound mixed rock with Brazilian rhythms, and Russo's stage presence became a defining part of their identity.
Renato Russo died in 1996, which marked the end of the band's active period. Their music continued to find listeners among Brazilian audiences who connected with both their sound and the subjects they addressed in songs like 'Como Matar Calvin Candie' and 'Observe o Espaço Entre o Trem e a Plataforma'.
