Background notes

Archive material and source history

Black Yaya formed in New York City in the late 2000s around vocalist and songwriter Yaya Bey. The band's sound came together with multi-instrumentalist and producer Chris Dave, working in a space between soul, R&B, and jazz.

Their debut album 'For the Culture' arrived in 2014, followed by 'The Healing Project' in 2017 and a self-titled record in 2020. The single 'Paint a Smile On Me' from that first album became a particular point of connection for listeners, built around Yaya Bey's direct vocal delivery.

Yaya Bey's lyrics drew some criticism for being outspoken, but she generally kept writing from a personal place. The band's lineup included musicians like Michael Brun on bass, Isaiah Sharkey on saxophone, and Anthony Tidd on guitar alongside Bey and Dave.
