Blindspott formed in New Zealand in the late 1990s as a trio with Damian Alexander on vocals, Karl Kippenberger on guitar, and Marcus Powell on bass. They put in time touring and working through financial difficulties before their self-titled debut album arrived in 2003.
That first record did well commercially and critically, with the single "Phantasy" becoming something of an anthem for them. Songs like "Tonight" and "Nil By Mouth" showed their mix of heavy riffs and melodic hooks. Their live shows were known for being energetic.
In 2004, they got tangled in a legal dispute with their former manager, which dragged on and seemed to wear on the band. Personal issues among the members added to the strain. They kept making music, with tracks like "1975" and "Au Marché Des Illusions" appearing in their catalog, but the group's momentum was complicated by those internal and external pressures.
