Blue Dragon formed in 1999 with vocalist Shuichi Ikeda, guitarist Shuhei Kita, bassist Tomoyasu Hotei, and drummer Masato Honda. They got their break in 2002 when they were asked to do the opening theme for the anime series Dragon Ball Z. That song, "Friend," became their calling card, a straightforward pop-rock track that connected with anime fans.
Their debut album was simply called Blue Dragon, and they followed it with other releases that sometimes leaned into electronic sounds. Songs like "Aoi Mirai" and "Hikari no Sasu Hou he" show the range they worked with, from upbeat rock to more atmospheric pieces.
In 2010, drummer Masato Honda left to work on solo projects. The band brought in Yasuhiro Nakao to replace him and kept going. They won a Tokyo Animation Award for Best Song at some point, which makes sense given how closely their music became tied to that world.
