Blue Magic

Blue Magic formed in Philadelphia in 1972, with Ted Mills, Wendell Calhoun, and Vernon Buchanan as founding members. They signed with Atlantic Records the following year and put out their self-titled debut album, which included the song "Sideshow." Their biggest hit, "Just Don't Wanna Be Lonely," came from that same period and became a staple of 1970s R&B radio.

Vernon Buchanan left the group in 1979, and the lineup shifted over the next few years with singers like Keith Beaton and Alvin Frazier coming through. They kept recording into the early 1980s, with albums like "Message from the Magic Dragon" and "Three Stripes." Other songs in their catalog include "Stop to Start" and "Three Ring Circus."

Their sound was built around close vocal harmonies and smooth arrangements, a style that fit right into the Philadelphia soul scene of the time. While they never quite matched the commercial peak of "Just Don't Wanna Be Lonely," that song and a handful of others have kept their name familiar to fans of the era.
