Bnz came together in the early 2010s as friends from the Maré favela in Rio de Janeiro. They started making music with what they had, drawing from hip-hop, funk, and samba rhythms that felt local and immediate. One of their tracks, 'Tia Valquíria' featuring Elkay, Lil Zé, and Wav, caught on as an anthem in Brazil.

The group's lyrics often touch on social and political realities, which has sometimes drawn attention from authorities. They've kept at it with three core members: MC Cabelinho handles much of the vocal charisma, MC Dede raps with a sharp eye on social issues, and MC Bin Laden produces and writes with a distinct touch. Their sound feels rooted in where they're from, without much polish or pretense.
