Bo Carter

Bo Carter was born Armenter Chatmon in Mississippi in 1894. He came from a sharecropping family and started playing music early. In the 1920s, he formed the Carter Brothers with his younger brother Joe, and they developed a style that mixed blues with country and folk elements.

Their recordings gained a following in the American South. Carter's song "Don't Mash My Digger So Deep" became well-known, though its suggestive lyrics sometimes drew attention. He recorded many songs, including "All Around Man," "Banana In Your Fruit Basket," and "Cigarette Blues."

Carter played guitar with a distinctive fingerpicking approach. The Carter Brothers lineup included other musicians like Lonnie Chatmon and Big Boy Edwards at times. Carter's music reflected the experiences of working people in his era.
