Bôa formed in 1997 when Jasmine Rodgers met guitarist Steve Birkett at a party. They started as a band called Venus before changing their name to Bôa, taking inspiration from the Portuguese word for 'snake.' Their debut album 'Race of the Honey Spittlers' came out in 1998, featuring Rodgers' distinctive vocals and Birkett's guitar work.

Their second album 'Cineastas' arrived in 2000 and included the song 'Duvet,' which became their most recognizable track. That song, along with others like 'Twilight' and 'Fool,' helped define their sound during that period.

Rodgers' personal struggles with mental health and substance use affected the band's creative process and relationships over time. Their music from those years remains what most listeners know them for.
