Boards Of Canada

Boards of Canada is a Scottish electronic duo made up of brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin. They started working together in the mid-1990s in Kirkcaldy, experimenting with tape manipulation and synthesizers. Their early material had a dreamy, collage-like quality that hinted at what would come later.

Their first album, Music Has the Right to Children from 1998, mixed ambient textures with downtempo rhythms and glitchy details. Tracks like 'An Eagle in Your Mind' and 'Julie and Candy' showed how they could build atmosphere from fragments of melody and found sound. The record established their sound without much fanfare, gathering a quiet following.

They followed it with Geogaddi in 2002, which took their approach into darker, more complex territory. The album's title is an anagram of 'Dogaddi', a reference to the Scottish Highlands. It's a record full of intricate patterns and haunting samples, less immediately accessible than their debut but just as carefully constructed.
