Editor's note

Bobby Darin, from rock to jazz and back

A Bronx-born singer who moved from rock hits to jazz standards and folk tunes.

For a quick sense of his range, listen to 'Beyond the Sea' and 'Simple Song of Freedom.' They're from different parts of his story.

He wasn't just a rock and roll guy. 'Mack the Knife' became a jazz-pop standard, and 'If I Were a Carpenter' showed he could handle folk and country. That range keeps his catalog from feeling stuck in one era.

He started with rock hits like 'Splish Splash' in the late 1950s. Later, he recorded jazz standards and shifted toward folk and country before his death in 1973.

Bobby Darin was born Walden Robert Cassotto in 1936 in the Bronx. He taught himself piano and guitar, and after signing with Decca Records in 1957, his first big hit was 'Splish Splash.'

His sound moved between rock, pop, and jazz, and he had a run of chart successes that included 'Mack the Knife,' 'Dream Lover,' and 'Beyond the Sea.' You can hear that range in songs like 'All Or Nothing At All' and 'Call Me Irresponsible.'

Later, his music shifted toward folk and country styles, with songs such as 'If I Were a Carpenter.' He died from heart failure in 1973.
