Boitezuleika

Boitezuleika formed in 1989 in Salvador, Bahia, with Luiz Caldas on vocals, Gilmário Marques on keyboards, André Becker on guitar, Paulo Vasconcellos on bass, and Pedro Santos on percussion. The band's sound pulls from traditional Brazilian rhythms, African beats, and experimental jazz, creating something that felt both rooted and unpredictable.

Caldas writes most of the lyrics, which often touch on love, sexuality, and social issues in ways that challenge norms. Songs like 'Bola de Sabão' and 'Circo do Amadeu' show their knack for wrapping sharp observations in melodies that feel both familiar and slightly off-kilter. The lineup has shifted over time, Becker and Vasconcellos left at some point, but Caldas, Marques, and Santos have remained constants, later joined by Ricardo Malta on bass and Marcelo Novaes on drums.

They've kept recording through the years, putting out albums like 'Babalu' in 1994, 'Simples' in 1996, 'Fenda' in 2000, 'Repente' in 2004, and 'Conexão' in 2009. Tracks such as 'Cidade Das Marionetas' and 'Espero-te na estação (Comboio)' reflect their ongoing interest in narrative and atmosphere. Their work has drawn fire from conservative critics and religious groups at times, but it has also found a steady audience that appreciates their particular blend of musical curiosity and lyrical provocation.
