Bonde do Gato Preto

Bonde do Gato Preto came out of Rio de Janeiro's favelas, specifically the Borel neighborhood, where they developed their funk carioca sound at local parties. The group included Mc Catra on lead vocals, with Mc Cebola and Mc Andrezinho also singing, and Dj Gugu handling turntables. They released albums like 'O Bonde do Gato Preto' in 2007, followed by 'O Bonde Continua' and 'Turu Turu' over the next few years.

Their track 'Baby Eu Te Amo Demais' broke through to a wider audience, though its lyrics drew criticism for being too explicit. Songs like 'Au Au Au' and 'Stress' kept their raw, energetic style front and center, often touching on themes that made some listeners uncomfortable while connecting with others in the favelas.

They kept putting out records through 2011 with 'Pode Chegar' and 'Quinto Andar', sticking to the provocative, beat-driven approach that defined their early work. The music never really softened or aimed for mainstream acceptance in a traditional sense, which is part of why it held its ground in Brazilian funk.
