Tracy Bonham

Tracy Bonham grew up in Eugene, Oregon, where both her parents were musicians. She started writing songs as a teenager, influenced by Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. In the early 1990s, she moved to New York City and eventually signed with Island Records.

Her 1996 debut album 'The Burdens of Being Upright' included the single 'Mother Mother,' which became her most recognizable song. The track's raw energy and direct lyrics connected with listeners, establishing her as a songwriter who could balance intensity with melodic hooks.

Bonham followed up with the 1998 album 'Down Here,' which reached number 12 on the Billboard 200. That period also brought some legal complications when similarities were noted between one of her songs and another artist's work, leading to a settlement. She continued recording through the 2000s and 2010s, with songs like 'Cold Day In Hell' and 'You Don't Know Me' showing her range from driving rock to more reflective material.
