Archive material and source history

Bonnie Pointer was born in Oakland, California, and grew up singing gospel and rhythm and blues. In 1971, she joined her sisters Anita, June, and Ruth to form the Pointer Sisters, where her voice became a central part of their early sound on songs like "Yes We Can Can."

She left the group in 1977 to pursue a solo career. Her debut album included the single "Heaven Must Have Sent You," which became a hit. That song, along with covers like "I Can't Help Myself" and "Come See About Me," defined her solo work in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

After her initial solo success, Bonnie Pointer's career became less visible. She recorded another album in 1984 and worked with various artists, but she never regained the prominence she had with the Pointer Sisters or during her first solo period.
