Bonray formed in Los Angeles in the early 2000s around lead singer and guitarist Ethan Ray, with bassist Jake Bishop and drummer Carter Hayes. Their debut single 'Inside Out' got them noticed, and their first album Shadows and Light built on that with heavy riffs and melodic vocals.
Ray's struggles with substance abuse and mental health became public as the band grew more popular, and there were reports of backstage fights and internal conflicts. They kept making music through it, putting out albums like The Divide and Echoes that touched on social issues and personal relationships.
The lineup changed over time. Bishop left in 2009 and was replaced by Alex Garcia on bass, then Hayes departed in 2012 with David Cruz taking over on drums. Ray stayed at the center through all of it, but the tensions eventually became too much.
