Archive material and source history

Born Lecil Travis Martin in 1931, Boxcar Willie grew up in poverty and spent time living in boxcars and rail yards. He taught himself guitar and began performing on street corners and in bars during the 1960s, developing a following with his straightforward country style.

Boxcar Willie maintained his version was about Southern heritage rather than racism.

He recorded songs like 'Fraulein,' 'A Good Old Country Song,' and 'Hobo Heaven,' often focusing on everyday struggles and simple joys. He toured regularly with a band that included musicians like Gene Lawson on lead guitar and Bill Owens on rhythm guitar.

Boxcar Willie was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008 and continued performing until his death in 2011.
