Boyd Bennett was a banjo player from West Virginia who put together a band called Boyd Bennett & His Rockets in 1957. They had guitarist Bill Reed, bassist Dave Smith, and drummer Jack Brown. Their thing was playing rock and roll with a banjo up front, which wasn't common at the time.
They released an album called 'Banjo Rock 'n' Roll' in 1958, and the title track became their calling card. Songs like 'Rockin' Up a Storm' and 'Tennessee Rock And Roll' followed that same energetic, banjo-driven approach. Some people in the music business thought it was just a novelty, but they kept at it.
The lineup changed over time. Reed left in 1960 and was replaced by guitarist Jimmy Lee. Smith left in 1964, with Bob Hayes taking over on bass. Bennett, Lee, and Hayes stayed together as the core for more than ten years. Their sound faded as music changed in the 1960s.
