Background notes

Archive material and source history

Bran Barr formed in Scotland in the late 1970s with Billy Jackson on vocals and guitar, John Martin also on vocals and guitar, and Iain Morrison on bass. They later added percussionist Allan MacDonald and keyboardist Andy MacLeod. Their first album came out in 1980, followed by others like 'The Book of Bran' in 1983 and 'The Green Isle' in 1985.

Their music worked with traditional Celtic instruments like the bodhrán, pennywhistle, and fiddle, but didn't stick strictly to old forms. Songs like 'The lamentable tragedy of Deirdra' and 'Bàas in the Underworld' show how they handled storytelling, often drawing from older legends but giving them their own shape.

They kept recording through the 1980s, putting out 'The Celtic Tapestry' in 1987 and 'The Lamentable Tragedy' in 1989. The band's sound stayed grounded in those early arrangements, Jackson's vocals, the layered guitars, the rhythmic drive from MacDonald's percussion, even as they moved through different albums.
