Background notes

Archive material and source history

Branco ou Tinto formed in Portugal in the early 1990s with Paulo Furtado on vocals, Manuel Guerreiro on guitar, Pedro Saraiva on bass, and Ricardo Raposo on drums. Furtado's interest in horror literature, especially Edgar Allan Poe, shaped their material. Their self-titled debut came out in 1991, followed by the album 'Canção de Terror' the next year.

That song, 'Canção de Terror,' became their most recognized track, though its dark themes drew some criticism. They kept making albums through the mid-to-late '90s, like 'O Último Tango' in 1994 and 'O Cemitério dos Mortos-Vivos' in 1996. Other songs in their catalog include 'O Abominável Inominável' and 'Subconsciente.'

Their music often dealt with unsettling or macabre subjects, which set them apart from more conventional pop at the time. They didn't really apologize for that direction, treating it as a legitimate part of their artistic approach. The band's work from that period remains a distinct chapter in Portuguese music.
