Brenda Fassie was born in Langa, Cape Town in 1964. She started singing professionally at 16 with a band called The Big Dudes. Her debut album 'Weekend Special' came out in 1983 when she was still a teenager.
Her music mixed traditional African rhythms with pop and disco elements. Songs like 'Vul'indlela' and 'Too Late For Mama' became hits in South Africa and beyond. 'Vul'indlela,' which translates to 'Open the Way,' was particularly popular and took on anthemic qualities for many listeners.
Fassie's personal life included struggles with drug addiction that she sometimes addressed in her music. In 1995 she was arrested for cocaine possession and served two years of a six-year sentence before being released. She died in 2004 at age 39.
