Editor's note

Brian Joo's quiet R&B and Korean pop turns

A singer who moved between Fly to the Sky duets and solo English-language R&B.

For the Korean pop side, try 'Saranghaji anhunikkayo.' For his solo English mood, 'All I Know' or 'Tears Run Dry' work.

He's one half of Fly to the Sky, the late-'90s Korean R&B duo that helped shape that sound. His solo work like 'All I Know' and 'Let This Die' with Flowsik shows a different side, quieter, more personal English-language tracks. The Korean ballad 'Saranghaji anhunikkayo' and the moody 'Tears Run Dry' give you both sides of his voice.

He started in Fly to the Sky in 1999, singing Korean R&B and ballads. Later solo albums like 'Brian Joo' in 2006 and 'ReBorn' in 2012 leaned into English-language R&B and collaborations. Songs like 'Dreaming' and 'Erase' kept that smooth, introspective feel going.

Archive material and source history

Brian Joo was born in Seoul in 1981 and grew up in Southern California, where he started singing as a teenager. He returned to South Korea in 2001 and released his debut album the following year. The single 'Never End' helped establish him early on.

His second album, 'Love Letter,' came out in 2006 and included the song '24,' which became a hit across Asia. That track, along with others like 'All I Know' and 'Don't Tell Me I'm Wrong,' showed his R&B leanings and vocal style.

In 2003, he was in a car accident that required rehabilitation. He also faced some criticism for releasing an English-language album when that was less common in K-pop at the time.
