Editor's note

Brian Wilson, the Beach Boy who changed pop music

The songwriter and producer behind the Beach Boys' sound, from surf anthems to the introspective Pet Sounds.

For a quick sense of his range, listen to 'God Only Knows' and then something like 'Let The Wind Blow.' They're from different eras, but you can hear the same ear for melody.

He wrote and produced early Beach Boys hits like 'Surfin' U.S.A.' and 'I Get Around,' songs that defined a California myth. Then he made Pet Sounds in 1966, an album that pushed pop into more personal, orchestrated territory with tracks like 'God Only Knows.' Later solo songs such as 'In Blue Hawaii' kept that imaginative streak alive.

He started making music with his brothers in Hawthorne in the early 1960s, forming the Beach Boys and crafting their surf-rock hits. After Pet Sounds, he continued writing and recording through various phases, both with the band and on his own, exploring different sounds in songs like 'Barnyard.'

Brian Wilson grew up in Hawthorne, California, and started making music with his brothers in the early 1960s. They formed the Beach Boys with cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine. Wilson wrote and produced many of their early hits, including 'Surfin' U.S.A.' and 'I Get Around,' which captured a certain California sound.

In 1966, Wilson made the album 'Pet Sounds,' which moved beyond surf rock into more complex arrangements and personal themes. The song 'God Only Knows' from that album became one of his most enduring compositions. Around this time, he also wrote 'Love and Mercy,' a track that would later become a touchstone in his solo work.

Wilson continued to write and record music through various phases, both with the Beach Boys and on his own. Songs like 'Barnyard' and 'In Blue Hawaii' show different sides of his musical imagination. His later work includes 'How Could We Still Be Dancin',' which appeared on a 2004 album.
