Here are the keys,

and utilities.

i'll sweep my years into plastic bags and envelopes,

and tuck them under the kitchen table.

push the things i squirrel away,

into any of these dusty corners,

in this dusty corner.

please guard the assets i'm preparing to sell,

to buy more time and then turn the time,

back into assets.

you'll hear the same creaks,

but narrate differently.

as how to get through this year keeps turning into how to get through the day.

somehow shopworn idioms achieve new meaning here when there's less to say.

as we keep painting silver linings gold,

and continue painting gold to gray.

a new lease on a borrowed life,

with no money down and nothing to sign.

i hope you find the same foothold,

between these cracking walls that i call a home.

but please watch your first step,

because i've been known to pace holes through the fucking floor and patch them with half-truths.
