Editor's note

Brokencyde's crunkcore mix of electronica and pop-punk

A short-lived but loud 2000s band that blended genres into a polarizing sound.

For the full Brokencyde experience, start with 'Booty Call' or '2 Drunk 2 Drive'. That's where their sound feels most raw and unapologetic.

Brokencyde's music, like 'Booty Call', captured a specific moment in the late 2000s when genres were colliding in messy, energetic ways. Their debut album I'm Not a Fan, But the Kids Like It! hit the Billboard 200, showing they had an audience even if critics didn't get it. The crunkcore label stuck because it fit their mix of electronica, pop-punk, and hip-hop.

They formed in Albuquerque in 2007 and put out Freaxxx in 2008. Their 2009 debut album charted, but by 2011's All Grown Up EP, the momentum had faded. The group disbanded in 2013 after a few more releases.

Brokencyde formed in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2007, with Mic the Microphone and Se7en the General handling vocals. Their sound mixed electronica, pop-punk, and hip-hop into what got labeled as crunkcore. They put out an EP called Freaxxx in 2008, then their debut album I'm Not a Fan, But the Kids Like It! in 2009. That album reached number 21 on the Billboard 200.

Songs like 'Booty Call' and 'Dis Iz A Rager Dude' had a certain juvenile energy that connected with some listeners but drew criticism from others.

They released an EP called All Grown Up in 2011, but it didn't find the same audience as their earlier work. The group's activity trailed off after that, with a few more releases before they disbanded in 2013.
