Brunatti & Os Colombinos formed in Porto Alegre, Brazil, with vocalist Luiz Carlos Brunatti and accordionist Rubens dos Santos, who went by Rubinho. They put out their first album, "Alma Brasileira," in 1978. The record didn't catch on commercially, but they kept playing shows around the country.
In 1980, they released "Telefone" as a single. The song, with Brunatti's lyrics about longing and Rubinho's accordion lines, connected with listeners across Brazil. It became their most recognizable track, though they had other songs like "Poema" and "Aposta" that found an audience too.
Some critics dismissed their music as too sentimental, but the band kept working. They didn't reshape Brazilian popular music so much as find a particular corner of it that resonated with people who wanted straightforward, melodic songs about everyday feelings.
