Archive material and source history
Buck Owens was born Alvis Edgar Owens Jr. in Sherman, Texas, but it was in Bakersfield, California where he developed the lean, twangy style that came to be called the Bakersfield sound. He formed his first band in the 1950s, and by 1963 had assembled the Buckaroos as his touring and recording group.
The Buckaroos' breakthrough came with the 1965 hit "Act Naturally," which topped the country charts. They followed with a string of successes including "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail," "Together Again," and "My Heart Skips a Beat." Their sound, a blend of honky-tonk and Western swing, was often at odds with the smoother Nashville production of the time.
They released albums like 'Buck Owens - Buckaroos' in 1965, 'I've Got a Tiger by the Tail' the same year, and 'Together Again' in 1966. The original Buckaroos lineup included Don Rich on guitar, Tom Brumley on bass, Doyle Holly on drums, and Merle Haggard on rhythm guitar.
