Pese a su tronco grueso y su gran porte (alcanza una altura de 10 a 15 m, con una amplia copa y grandes raíces visibles) es discutido si es un arbol, un arbusto o una hierba, de madera esponjosa y blanda; contiene grandes cantidades de agua, lo que le permite sobrevivir en el entorno de escasas lluvias de la pampa seca. Crece rápidamente, y es inmune a buena parte de seca.
