Background notes

Archive material and source history

The Bullring Brummies came out of Birmingham in the late 1960s, taking their name from the city's Bullring shopping center. They put out a single called "The Wizard" in 1971 that got some attention. The song had a haunting quality and cryptic lyrics that people talked about, with some hearing it as a surreal story and others picking up on occult references.

Their debut album, also called "Bullring Brummies," came out that same year and included "The Wizard." They released a couple more records after that, "East of the Sun" in 1972 and "The Final Flame" in 1973. The band didn't last long into the 1970s, but that one song stuck around in people's memories.
