Burton formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1990s with Jake Burton on vocals and guitar, Alex James on guitar and vocals, Max Carter on bass, and Ethan Hayes on drums. They drew from classic rock, indie, and folk, and their song 'Sunset San Francisco' came out in 2003. That track, with its imagery of a city in golden light, got a lot of radio play and became their best-known work.
Alex James left the band in 2006, which was a significant change. They kept going and put out albums like 'The Long Shadow' in 2005 and 'The City of Lost Dreams' in 2008. Their songs often dealt with love, loss, and human complexity, built around melodic hooks and introspective lyrics.
