Burton Cummings first came to attention as the lead singer and keyboardist for the Guess Who in the mid-1960s. The Winnipeg band had hits like "These Eyes" and "American Woman" before Cummings left in 1975 to work on his own material. His solo albums from that period include 'Burton Cummings' in 1976 and 'My Own Way to Rock' in 1978.
That title track, "My Own Way to Rock," became one of his best-known solo songs, along with "Stand Tall" and "Break It To Them Gently." He recorded with musicians like guitarist Colin James and songwriter Jim Vallance. Cummings kept making records into the early 1980s, with albums like 'Woman Love' and 'Up in Air.'
