Buster Poindexter

Buster Poindexter was born David Johansen in Staten Island, New York. He became known in the 1980s for his flamboyant stage presence and a distinctive baritone voice. His cover of 'Hit the Road Jack' in 1987 became his most recognizable track, reaching the top 10 in several countries.

He released four studio albums between 1987 and 1994, including 'Buster Poindexter' and 'Buster Goes Berserk.' Other songs like 'Hot Hot Hot' and 'Alcohol' carried that same mix of rhythm and blues with a theatrical delivery. His performances sometimes drew criticism, like a 1989 'Saturday Night Live' appearance that some viewers found too suggestive.

Poindexter collaborated with musicians including James Brown and Ryuichi Sakamoto. The music kept a loose, humorous feel, never taking itself too seriously even when the arrangements were tight. He wore the persona well, the Panama hat, the suits, but the songs themselves had enough swing to stand on their own.
