Byself formed in 2015 when Rostam Batmanglij, who had worked with Vampire Weekend, and Hamilton Leithauser, from The Walkmen, started making music together. Their debut album came out the following year, titled 'All Screwed Up' after its lead track. That song captured a particular kind of relationship tension with a raw, direct feel.

They put out two more albums, 'Our First 100 Days' in 2018 and 'Overheated' in 2020. The music on these records incorporated more electronic textures and distorted guitar work alongside the core songwriting. Rostam typically handled production and writing, while Hamilton's vocals brought a charged, emotional presence to their performances.
